Restore our Ocean and Waters Forum

In March, Marcela participated to the “Restore our Ocean and Waters Forum” representing Armengaud Innovate and the iMERMAID project.
Under the flag of the Mission Ocean initiative many projects were presented and the topics ranged from ocean protection, pollution elimination to circularity in the blue economy, citizen engagement or establishment of a digital twin.
Summarized due to USA funding cuts, even more increasing need to fund and support European ocean science and its scale-up. Many strong statements were made such as “the oceans require action; we are not allowed to waist a minute”. Already a large number of highly successful small initiatives, strong education potential reaching cultural shift in ocean perception, eliminating majority of pollution at the source as well as strong shared knowledge.
Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, European Commission then concluded the meeting by stating that all scientific findings of mission ocean are essential for the preparation of upcoming UN conference in Nice in Juni 2025. This intends to establish intergovernmental panel for ocean similar to that of intergovernmental panel for climate change.
