SARAH: project presentation and update

Project: SARAH
Impact

As of June 1st 2025, a new project has started: SARAH. We are proud to contribute to this project with Innovation management and leading the Work Packages on Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation, focusing on communication and exploitation.

SARAH – uSer-centred civil infrAstructure Reliable Assessment and Healing

Major disasters (e.g. Ponte Morandi, 2018) highlighted the critical condition of many European civil infrastructures due to inadequate maintenance, unforeseen operating conditions, and extended usage. Regular inspections of all types of infrastructures are essential to assess their health, guide maintenance and repair, and extend service life.
SARAH adopts a human-centred approach to develop a safe-by-design integrated digital solution that supports maintenance and repair decision and planning, order, intervention and reporting. Leveraging metaverse technologies and egocentric augmented reality solutions, the system empowers infrastructure supervisors and intervention workers by providing real-time assistance, fostering skill development, and improving their Occupational Safety and Health. The solution, rooted in Human Factors:

  • dentifies issues in civil infrastructures in a rapid, cost-effective and safe manner thanks to innovative sensors deployed on-site (corrosion, soil nail and anchor, structural crack) possibly via an unmanned aerial system (load up to 1kg);
  • fastly and accurately assesses the needs for repair (98 % of issues properly ranked) using a Digital Twin of the infrastructure able to run in real-time (reduced order, automatic continuous calibration) and proposes prioritised timely interventions, considering risk assessment using a Decision Support Engine (80% ad hoc correct advice for inspections);
  • launches extra inspections (either with autonomous aerial system or human), and provides remote support to the intervention workers (80% satisfaction, evaluated via interviews);
  • delivers certification report generated using generative AI, after intervention and repair (at least 2 types of reports generated). With this approach, SARAH offers a game changer for infrastructure inspection, maintenance and repair.

Project Update

SARAH is coordinated by CEA Leti who organized a pre-KOM Meeting already in May 2025 with Eric Armengaud and Ingrid Armengaud participating to it. Also organised by CEA, the Kick-Off Meeting took place in June 2025 and it was time for Eric Armengaud and Robert Permann to participate to it.

Let us introduce the team that is active in the SARAH project:

  • Robert Permann as Technical Project Leader, focusing on establishing the link between the technical work in the project with innovation management and communciation
  • Eric Armengaud as Innovation Manager, supporting the path towards exploitation and sustainability concepts for the solutions developed
  • Ingrid Armengaud, leading the work packages for communication, disseminaiton and exploitation supported by
  • Iris Derler, focusing on content management for SARAH.
  • Anna Zamecnik, managing our activities with regards to the DMP.

After three months of project execution, what’s on our plate? While Robert is deeply involved in the technical discussion, it was up to Ingrid and Iris to set up the project visual identity, the website has just been released and we are currently working on further communication material and the Data Management Plan. .

We’re inviting you to follow the activities of the SARAH project, both here on our page as well as the project LinkedIn – and of course the project website!
